Probably not. But if I asked if you have heard the song “It is well with my soul”, most would say yes.
I am sure many of you have heard the story concerning how this song was written. But by clicking here you may find some details that are often left out.

Jason, thank you so much for sharing that story. It has really touched my heart. I have sung that song so many times. I have always loved it, and while knowing that there is always a story behind how such songs are written, I never knew its tragic birth. As a history nerd, I have read many interesting facts about the Chicago Fire and how it devastated many lives. This just adds more character to its fury. It is unbelieveable the pain and suffering Spafford and his family went through, but what a testimony of their faith. And what’s more interesting is the fact that he was an attorney. Most attorneys don’t have a very good reputation these days. This is such an inspiration. From this day on, when I sing this song, I will think of the faith of this man and the trials he overcame in his life. It just goes to show you how comforting our faith in God can be in times of hurt, sorrow, and pain. They never stopped trusting and praising Him for all they had been given. Wow!

Spafford’s story is inspiring; his hymn one of my favorites. Thanks for highlighting it, Jason. My daughter told her storm story to our congregation last month before we sang this great hymn of faith. You can read her testimony here: http://lsbmusings.wordpress.com/2008/06/08/praise-you-in-the-storm/
